Xp4L
XP4L represents a seamlessly integrated solution aimed at unlocking the full potential of spatial audio design and performance within Ableton Live. Consisting of five Max for Live devices and a standalone application available for purchase, XP offers a comprehensive toolkit for spatial audio production, built at its core on IRCAM's Spat~ library of Max/MSP objects for simulating virtual acoustic spaces with real-time precision. The name "xp" is itself a play on words, standing both for "eXPand" and, spoken aloud in French, for "eXPérimental." It supports every configuration Ableton itself allows, up to 62 output channels once accounting for Ableton's own channel limit, alongside all major spatialisation algorithms including VBAP, HOA and binaural, a generative engine for animating sound sources built on Max's Jitter library, and a straightforward way to record multichannel streams directly from Ableton. Projects can be organised into up to four rooms, sources instantiate dynamically through drag-and-drop with automatic naming, and every parameter of the underlying Spat~ room module is fully exposed to the Ableton workflow, with configurations saveable and reloadable as user presets.

XP4L was initiated in 2019 by artist Eric Raynaud, known under the stage name Fraction, during an artistic research residency at IRCAM undertaken in partnership with SAT, the Société des arts technologiques in Montreal, under the project name "Symbiosis." The original aim was to improve interactions between spatialised sound and generative visual synthesis within the Satosphere, SAT's immersive dome venue, and the residency's first tangible output was a Max for Live device called Spat4Sat, integrating IRCAM's newly updated Spat5 library into Ableton Live. New perspectives arising from the residency, together with the onset of the pandemic, led Raynaud to reorient the project into what became the broader, publicly released XP4L. The tool has continued to expand steadily since its release, growing from its original five Max for Live devices to seven and then twelve across subsequent updates, alongside the introduction of a time-unlimited demo mode for newcomers to try the software freely.
