APL Virtuoso
APL Virtuoso is a binaural audio renderer that virtualises stereo or immersive loudspeaker setups and listening rooms for headphone listening, with customisable acoustic parameters and 53 loudspeaker configurations supporting all popular immersive audio formats. It runs on the proprietary APL Spatial Audio Engine, known as ASPEN, and offers multiple HRTF sets alongside SOFA file import for personal profiles, headphone equalisation covering over 100 models, and head-tracking support across the APL, Audeze, IEM and Waves Nx OSC formats, including dedicated support for Audeze Maxwell headphones. Available as both a plug-in — in VST, AU and AAX formats — and a standalone application with a built-in WAV/ADM player for quality control and playback, Virtuoso has been used professionally on productions including the television series Halo.

APL Virtuoso comes from the Applied Psychoacoustics Laboratory, founded in 2013 by Professor Hyunkook Lee, Director of the Centre for Audio and Psychoacoustic Engineering at the University of Huddersfield in the UK, and represents more than a decade of the lab's research into binaural audio and spatial sound. The software entered early access in April 2023 and launched officially the following month, quickly gaining traction with mastering and mixing engineers looking for a reliable way to monitor immersive mixes away from a full loudspeaker setup. Pro Tools support followed with an AAX version in late 2023, and in 2024 APL released Virtuoso v2, adding acoustics emulation and externalisation to simulate listening in a tuned room, along with support for Audeze Maxwell head-tracking headphones and the ability to load personal HRTF profiles.
