Transpanner PRO

Transpanner PRO is a plug-in for transaural processing offering control over sound positioning and depth, enabling audio professionals to craft realistic 3D soundscapes with a standard stereo loudspeaker setup. Its polar pad interface lets users drag a thumb around a central point to set any angle from 0 to 360 degrees, with distance controlled separately: at 0% distance only the dry sound is heard, while at 100% distance a set of "far field" parameters, reverb and low/high-cut filtering, take over to emphasise diffusion and distant timbral character. An offset control can shift the reverb's apparent angle away from the dry sound for added spatial complexity, and a Doppler effect simulation alters pitch and volume based on the sound source's relative motion, with mono or stereo input and separate near- and far-field gain controls. Available in AU and VST3 formats for macOS and Windows, it's priced on a pay-what-you-want basis with a discounted minimum.

history

+

The transaural technique underlying Transpanner PRO dates back to the 1970s, when Duane H. Cooper and Jerald L. Bauck developed it as a way to cancel crosstalk between two loudspeakers and a single listener, first published as a master's thesis at the University of Illinois in 1978 and later in the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society. Artists in DSP built on that foundation with their original Transpanner plug-in, followed by the free, donationware Transpanner 2 in early 2024, which introduced the polar pad interface and combined transaural crosstalk cancellation with ambiophonic processing to pan sound across a full 360 degrees using ordinary stereo monitors. Transpanner PRO followed later that year as a paid, professional evolution of the same approach, adding features such as Doppler simulation and dedicated far-field reverb shaping aimed at more advanced spatial sound design work.
