SPARTA Suite

SPARTA is a collection of flexible VST plug-ins covering spatial audio production, reproduction and visualisation, developed primarily by members of the Acoustics Lab at Aalto University in Finland. The plug-ins are released across all major formats, VST, VST3, AU, LV2 and AAX, and the Ambisonic tools support resolutions up to 10th order, with binaural decoders offering head-tracking via OSC. The installer brings together several suites beyond the core SPARTA plug-ins: COMPASS, HO-DirAC, the CroPaC Binaural Decoder, and HO-SIRR for room impulse response rendering. While the baseline SPARTA plug-ins rely on conventional linear Ambisonics, these additional suites use parametric, signal-dependent processing instead, extracting meaningful parameters from the incoming audio over time and applying them to map input to output in a more adaptive, informed way.

history

+

SPARTA grew out of teaching and research work at Aalto's Acoustics Lab, where many of its plug-ins were already in internal use for several years before Leo McCormack and colleagues released the full library as open source in 2018. Two of its earliest tools, Panner and Binauraliser, are built on Vector-Base Amplitude Panning, a technique the department's own head had developed back in the late 1990s. The parametric approach behind the later suites was set out by McCormack and Archontis Politis in a 2019 AES conference paper, and the complete codebase remains freely available on GitHub, built with JUCE and Aalto's Spatial_Audio_Framework.
