SPAT Bundle

The SPAT Bundle brings a suite of Max for Live devices to Ableton, giving producers detailed control over how sounds sit and move within a real or entirely invented three-dimensional space. Underpinning it all is IRCAM's Spatialisateur engine, better known as Spat~, which handles stereo, binaural and transaural processing in real time through three core devices: Spatial, Room and Multiverb. Step up to the Multichannel Pack, and that same engine extends to driving as many as 32 satellite speakers across a wide range of layouts, complete with a Speaker Editor tool for mapping your actual studio or venue layout directly into the plugin.

history

+

The technology at the heart of the SPAT Bundle goes back further than the plugin itself: the Spatialisateur project began in 1991 as a joint effort between Espaces Nouveaux and IRCAM, aiming to build a processor that let composers and sound engineers shape how audio diffused through real or virtual rooms. Decades of subsequent research at IRCAM's acoustics lab and Télécom Paris fed into that original engine. It eventually found its way into Ableton Live through Music Unit's Manuel Poletti, who built the SPAT Devices for Live in collaboration with IRCAM–work that was later showcased at the Ircam Forum Workshop in 2023 before being released as the SPAT Stereo and SPAT Multichannel Packs.
