Nuendo

Nuendo is a DAW mostly known for its tools for cinema, TV, game audio and spatial audio production. It has full integration with Dolby Atmos, including a built-in Dolby Atmos Renderer, ADM authoring, ADM import and onboard head tracking, and supports Auro-3D, Ambisonics, binaural and other formats with configurations of up to 9.1.6 and as many as 64 beds. Later versions added a binaural downmix mode and a Headphones Match plug-in that compensates for the frequency response of hundreds of headphone models, for monitoring Atmos mixes without a full speaker array, along with native MPEG-H support alongside its existing Atmos tools.

history

+

Nuendo was developed by Steinberg Media Technologies, the Hamburg-based company founded in 1984 and now a Yamaha subsidiary, and first released in 2000, deliberately positioned to take on Pro Tools' then-dominance of the post-production market rather than compete directly with Steinberg's own established Cubase. Dedicated spatial audio tooling arrived two decades later, in Nuendo 11 (2020), released in the software's twentieth-anniversary year with ADM authoring for Dolby Atmos and an integrated renderer that let engineers author to Atmos specifications without needing Dolby's separate Production and Mastering Suites. Nuendo 12 followed in 2022, adding binaural rendering and headphone-matching tools for monitoring immersive mixes without a full speaker array, and Nuendo 13 extended the immersive toolset further with native support for the MPEG-H format alongside Atmos.
