MCFX

MCFX is a suite of cross-platform multichannel VST plug-ins or standalone applications, developed to be used with the ambiX Ambisonic plug-ins (also by Matthias Kronlachner). The suite consists of mcfx_convolver, mcfx_delay, mcfx_filter, mcfx_gain_delay, mcfx_meter and mcfx_mimoeq, designed to be handy whenever multiple channels need processing at once, for multiple loudspeaker setups, Ambisonics workflows alongside ambiX, or post-production of microphone-array recordings such as those from an Eigenmike. Each plug-in ships as a single VST3 binary that automatically adjusts to a track's channel count, up to 64 channels. The mcfx_convolver in particular uses a highly optimised, non-uniformly partitioned fast convolution engine with SIMD support for both Intel and Apple Silicon, can load jconvolver-compatible .conf configuration files or .wav files directly via drag and drop, and can embed its preset inside the DAW project itself, alongside OSC remote control for reloading or loading presets.

MCFX has been developed by Matthias Kronlachner since 2013, alongside his related ambiX Ambisonic plug-in suite, and has remained in continuous development ever since. Early updates through 2014 and 2015 addressed compatibility with hosts such as Plogue Bidule and AudioMulch, while later releases steadily expanded the convolver's capabilities, adding OSC remote-control support for reloading and loading presets in 2019 and the ability to embed a preset directly within a DAW project, so sessions could be shared without separate preset files, in early 2020. The mcfx_convolver plugin later formed the basis of a separate fork, X-MCFX, developed by Angelo Farina in 2021 with further performance optimisations and an extended channel count.
